UScellular Kicks Off Annual Black History Month Art Contest with Boys & Girls Clubs of America
CHICAGO (Jan. 16, 2023) – In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, UScellular and Boys & Girls Clubs of America are kicking off their annual Black History Month Art Contest. This contest began in 2008 at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia and has since grown to include 30 Clubs across the country in 2023.
To participate in the contest, Boys & Girls Club members are encouraged to create original pieces of artwork representing influential Black STEM icons. These can include historical figures, world leaders, scientists and educators who have made vital contributions to the world of science, technology, engineering and math.
Ten finalists from each Boys & Girls Club will be chosen by local Club representatives and UScellular leaders based on creativity, quality, interpretation, clarity of theme and overall impression. The finalists’ artwork will be digitally displayed in select stores, and from Feb. 1 – Feb. 28, anyone 18 and older is invited to vote for their favorite art online.
The top three vote-getters at all 30 Clubs will be announced in March. UScellular’s Network of Black Associates resource group is funding this year’s prizes, which include $250 for first place, $150 for second and $100 for third.

A recent UScellular survey1 revealed that almost half of students don't know enough about the opportunities a STEM education would afford and the same amount think there isn't enough racial diversity in the STEM workforce.
